Mont Blanc Tunnel

Integral 3D survey and continuous monitoring of infrastructure

From 2018 we create for the Mont Blanc Tunnel one complete and updated 3D survey of the entire infrastructure, including the main pipe (13 km) and the service tunnel located below the carriageway.

Activities include:
– 3D acquisition e analysis of sections and shapes,
generation of cylindrical orthophotos for checking the condition of the vault,
regular updates every two years in support of all operations of maintenance, monitoring and safety.

The challenge

The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a road infrastructure highly complex, with a single barrel and extremely short closing windows to allow for surveys. Every intervention must be planned with pinpoint accuracy so as not to interfere with traffic and to ensure that inspection and maintenance activities are completed within the scheduled time frame.

The “ad hoc” solution”

We have developed a optimised operating protocol, which allows the entire tunnel to be scanned quickly with high-precision laser scanner and techniques of continuous 3D modelling. The data is processed and integrated into a updated and navigable dataset, accessible through our software platform Ad Hoc MM, which enables technicians and managers to:
– quickly check the status of the gallery,
– identify areas of deterioration or deformation,
– plan targeted interventions, reducing downtime.

constant, accurate and digital monitoring which, since 2018, has been contributing to the safety and efficiency of one of Europe's most iconic engineering works.
