We carried out a complete 3D survey of the 24 canvases of the Maria de’ Medici cycle preserved at the Louvre Museum, integrating and overlaying multiple diagnostic investigation layers (diffused light, raking light, radiography, UV, fluorescence, infrared, X-ray, and micro-XRF). The result was a digital system for analysis and comparison, supporting the planning and management of restoration interventions — a true clinical record of the artworks, accessible to the appointed restorers.
Through this platform, professionals involved can:
– examine and compare the different diagnostic layers,
– identify issues and deterioration,
– quantify the affected surfaces,
– design targeted cleaning, consolidation, and restoration interventions.
The challenge
This was an unprecedented restoration operation in terms of scale, historical importance, economic value, and technical complexity. It was necessary to coordinate multiple working groups, centralize heterogeneous diagnostic data, and ensure a precise and coherent overview of the entire pictorial cycle.
The “ad hoc” solution”
The 3D model produced and the Ad Hoc MM management system proved to be key tools for organizing, documenting, and planning every phase of the project.
Thanks to this integration, the Louvre was able to:
– efficiently coordinate the various restoration activities,
– monitor work progress in real time,
– maintain a structured and shared digital archive of all diagnostic analyses.
The Result: An innovative approach that brought together art, technology, and scientific method, providing the Louvre Museum with a cutting-edge operational tool for the conservation and enhancement of its heritage.
