Emergency archaeological excavation

At Porta Palazzo, Turin

We carried out a 3D survey of an archaeological context of particular interest, uncovered during the construction of the technical rooms of a new building. The intervention was aimed at documenting the area in two distinct phases: before and after the removal of the collapse of a Roman-era roof, ensuring a complete record of the state of preservation and the transformations that occurred during the operations.

The challenge

The construction site imposed extremely tight deadlines and the need to quickly clear the work area, without compromising the quality of archaeological documentation. It was therefore essential to adopt a rapid, precise, and non-invasive survey methodology, capable of delivering reliable metric and photogrammetric data in a short time.

The “ad hoc” solution”

We employed fast 3D surveying techniques, optimizing data collection with lightweight, high-efficiency equipment. In just a few hours, it was possible to acquire and deliver detailed 3D models and high-resolution orthophotos of the two excavation phases, providing the team of archaeologists with complete, precise, and perfectly comparable documentation over time.
The Result: An approach that demonstrates how the targeted use of rapid 3D surveying technologies can reconcile the demands of modern construction sites with the methodological rigor of archaeological research, ensuring accurate digital preservation even in highly complex operational contexts.
