We carried out a complete 3D survey of the urban excavation at Porta Pretoria in Aosta, producing three-dimensional models and orthophotos corresponding to 18 different excavation phases, each linked to the emergence of major archaeological contexts of interest.
The challenge
The goal was to comprehensively and three-dimensionally document the entire excavation process, maintaining consistency between geometric, stratigraphic, and descriptive information. The complexity of the site and the need to manage large amounts of heterogeneous data required an integrated digital system capable of combining the precision of 3D surveying with the methodological structure of traditional archaeological documentation.
The “ad hoc” solution”
We developed a dedicated 3D management platform based on Ad Hoc AM software, which allows:
– compiling and visualizing US, USM, and UT records directly in a 3D environment,
– integrating phase and period plans,
– processing stratigraphic sections and documentation,
– generating and updating the Matrix and 3D Matrix in real time.
The Result: thanks to this approach, it was possible to obtain complete, coherent, and navigable three-dimensional documentation, making the excavation fully traceable, analyzable, and shareable among archaeologists, designers, and institutions. An exemplary case of integration between digital surveying and stratigraphic methodology, representing a new frontier in archaeological data documentation and management.
